Actually, I have been thinking about spring for awhile. I have forced some branches from the lilac and forsythia and I have had my nut babies hanging up since the beginning of March. I have also started some seeds in a seed planter thing I got at a store for $5.00. It is biodegradeable and so each little pocket can be cut apart and planted. So far, I have started more than 18 tomato plants (way, way too many) and about six sweet pepper plants, not sure if they are yellow, red, orange, or green (surprise!). The eggplant seeds I planted have not come up and I think they are maybe not going to, the seeds weren't brand new this year. So, this morning on Amazon I ordered seeds...organic seeds, eggplant, carrot, and radish seeds. I will try again with the eggplant. I have come to love, love, love eggplant roasted in the oven in a little bit of olive oil and with some salt. So, I would really like to grow some of my own. In Arkansas I was able to get the long skinny kind of eggplant that could be cut up to look like coins and roasted. It is wonderful just straight out of the oven, or covered in some kind of sauce instead of pasta. This is a good thing for me because with the dx of diabetes, I need to find ways to control my carb count and the sauce in and of itself is pretty high in carbs.
I also ordered a compost bin for $29.00, I have been thinking about composting for a few years, and this seemed like the time to try it since I could get this compost bin for a fraction of what they usually cost. It had pretty good reviews, so I took the plunge. My husband is not on board about the composting. He grew up on a farm, and somehow this idea of putting garbage and grass clippings together just doesn't sit well with him. Like it is against some unwritten code or against his religion,(hahaha). I am not sure if it is the smell he's worried about or if because it is outside it will have to be maintained by him. He talked me out of trying this last year, and when I saw that the price of most of the compost bins was around $100.00+ I thought maybe not. I have every intention of taking care of this myself with perhaps a little assistance getting it set up.
Maybe I'll make a convert out of him, I have had that effect on him in the past. For example, he saw no need to go on vacations until he went on one or two....he can be pretty insistent if he doesn't think something is a good idea....the first time we went on a short weekend trip to Shaker Villiage in KY with the girls when they were little he complained all the way there (whew!), then when he went inside, he was awed by the whole experience. But I digress....
I am redoubling my efforts at preparing for spring because it is at present, snowing, snowing, snowing again; April 1, I have seen snow later than this but only in Lockport, NY! I wanted to get a picture to show you how it is snowing, but I can't find the camera...probably in the Corolla from the last trip we took when we didn't take a single picture.
