John 9:1-41 Gospel reflection on a man born blind

This is a lengthy story....there is a great deal of detail, Jesus, disciples, man born blind, clay made with Jesus' spit, washing in the pool of Siloam, the Pharisees, the man's parents, much investigation, lots of language, and at the end, Jesus, proclaiming himself as the Son of Man... something about those who were blind seeing and those who can see being blind.
But what's it all about?  The miracle?  Not really, although it is impressive, Jesus heals someone who is born blind -- that's unheard of-- but there are many stories of miracles performed by Jesus, he often says they are performed so that someone "may believe".  Is it about the man's faith? I think partly it is, but just as sure as it is about this blind man's faith and response to Jesus, it is also about the Pharisees and their inability to wrap their heads around the truth.
Why is it always so difficult for the poor Pharisees and the religious leaders of the time? It almost makes you feel sorry for them, they seemingly have it all but they are missing the truth all the time.  This time they are unable to grasp what is happening because Jesus has broken one of their cardinal rules, he has performed a miracle on the Sabbath, which constitutes work, which to them is a sin.  To be fair, the Jews have had a rough way to go since God gave Moses the ten commandments....last week's readings recalled  the ten commandments : the third one "Remember the Sabbath Day and Keep it Holy", six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord your God. No work may be done by you or etc...etc..etc.. The Pharisees have had many years to "think" about this commandment and parse out exactly what they think God means by this in every circumstance.
I believe they mean well, but the "thinking" gets them into trouble.  We cannot know the mind of God completely and when we "think" so much and continue to come up with new circumstances, new laws, new stipulations to old laws, we are on the wrong track.....That, I believe is what Jesus is trying to teach the Pharisees and us in this story....Jesus knew the rules, but he chooses to lead with his heart.  He chooses to listen to God and do the loving act of healing this man right now, right then and there.
I love to watch the movie "Chocolat" every year at the beginning of Lent....I like the reminder it gives me about the message of Love.  One line "don't worry so much about should" comes back to me .  Also the speech on Easter morning by the young priest.  He says "Here is what I think; we cannot measure holiness by what we don't do or the people we exclude..."

  1. I'm annoyed - I have been peeking in here every once in awhile, and I must have somehow missed your post at the end of February. Oh well.

I do like that prayer Donna sent you, I think about it every once in awhile.

Thinking gets in the way of a lot of things in life I believe... :)
