We celebrate Epiphany at this time of the year, January 5-6. When the Magi came, literally, or metaphorically, and found a baby in a manger; they worshipped and paid him homage, brought gifts.
What is also implied is that this baby in a manger was not what their thoughts were imagining when seeking the King of the Jewish people. But the Magi listened to Spirit as it whispered "Go- this is important!" They set out, took the long journey crossing deserts on the urging of the Holy who was not coming to them in the form of the Jewish God, but in a form that the could understand. That is how God has always worked with we who are human and limited in our scope and perceptions. And so, with their knowledge and hearts turned toward the Ineffable Divine, they set out on what some imagine was a 2 year journey, following a star in the sky.
When they arrived, it was clear that the circumstances of this Child were not kingly, but ordinary. They did not turn back, or question, they listened to Spirit, they worshipped and paid homage with their hearts, and presented their gifts.
I believe this is what I am asked to do today. Listen to God, listen to the whispers of the Spirit in my heart, and set out on my own journey to present my gifts, whatever they may be, in perhaps the most unlikely of places.
What a great sentiment to start the year with!
ReplyDeleteOn Epiphany Fr. Sagar talked about just this, actually. And I think it's a great sentiment. And a testament to faith, really.
